Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) BTEC Level 3 at Priestley College

Course description

This course is ideal for the sports fanatic, especially if you are looking for a career in the sports industry or fancy studying sport at University. You will develop your skills set and an understanding of the breadth of sport so that you can make positive career choices. If you are set on a future in sport join this outstanding Curriculum Area and study a BTEC Level 3 qualification.

Course content

During the course you will study a range of topics to give you an insight into the world of sport. They include externally assessed units in the following:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being
  • Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity.

Other mandatory units include Sports Leadership, Sports Psychology, Coaching for Performance and Coaching and Leading for Participation. Optional units will include Sports Massage, Application of Fitness Testing Sports and Event Organisation.

Entry requirements

We aim to provide you with a challenging and interesting programme that develops your individual range of abilities. You will be expected to develop your coaching skills by communicating in front of a group and we will encourage you to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning. Organisational skills are vital as you will produce a comprehensive portfolio of evidence and meeting and working to deadlines is a very important aspect of this course.

Assessment

You will be required to undertake 3 external assessments in

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being
  • Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity.

During the other mandatory and optional units your tutors will mainly set assignments for you to complete. A range of assessment methods will be used, such as practical observations and testing, presentations, timed assignments and interviews. You will be expected to complete much of the assignment work in your own time. You will receive plenty of feedback on how you are progressing during the units and how to improve throughout the course. You will be given grades for each unit of Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction* to arrive at an overall grade for this qualification.

Future opportunities

Your BTEC final grade is converted directly to UCAS points in the same way as A-Level qualifications. Many students choose to continue their studies in higher education. Previous students have gained places on degree courses in Sports Development, Sports Coaching, Youth Work, Physical Education (QTS), Business in Football, Sports Nutrition and other sports related degrees. Other students choose to enter into full time employment in the sports industry or apply for apprenticeships.

Further information

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of specialised study visits, guest speakers, residential experiences and a range of practical activities, to compliment your programme of study. We also encourage students to gain work-based and volunteering experience in the local community.
