Production Arts Theatrical Costume, Hair and Make-up is a high quality training programme which provides opportunities for students to explore all aspects of these backstage production roles; instilling the skills, knowledge, and professionalism needed to progress onto a Higher Education course and succeed in the performance industry. This course is aimed at students with a particular interest in theatre design including costume, hair, make-up and props for performance. You will explore a wide range of products and techniques in each area and develop your skills with real production experience of the backstage roles that are essential for the staging of a successful performance. You will work closely with production managers, directors and designers to create a variety of performance spaces During your second year you will have an opportunity to manage a team in your preferred specialist area.
Production Arts have strong links with producing and receiving theatres including West Yorkshire Playhouse, Opera North and Howard Assembly Rooms.
You will develop your Production Arts skills initially with classroom activities and will progress to working on real productions given by the Leeds City College Performing Arts students.
You will design hair, costume and make-up for shows and will work closely with the cast members to realise your designs for the stage. During show weeks you will experience the fast pace of a real working theatre environment with the opportunity to experience additional roles such as Stage Management, Props, Front of House and Box office. Be prepared for exciting challenges, for hard work and long hours as you manage all the backstage requirements of a real live show performed to a paying audience.
As you develop your own individual talents and interests you will gain an appreciation of the importance of team work in the creative industries.

If you are part of the new grading system for GCSE we would see a Grade 4 or above as the equivalent of a Grade C in this offer.
5 A*-C GCSEs including English or equivalent and a successful interview. Portfolio of creative work.
To achieve a qualification you will need to complete a minimum of 18 units during your 2 year programme of study. The course is accredited by BTEC and you will be assessed through a variety of different methods including:
- In class –practical workshops
- Rehearsals and commitment
- Written work
- Log books/sketch books
- Online forums/blogs
- Video submissions
Most of our students tend to go onto Higher Education to study degrees in various backstage areas including:
- Costume Design
- Stage Management
- Special Effects Make-up
- Events Management
- Set and Props Making
Some will go directly into employment/apprenticeships within the performing arts industry.
