Geography AS/A Level at Ysgol Brynrefail
What will I learn?
This qualification is made up of four units which are G1 – Changing Physical Environments, G2 – Changing Human Environments, G3 – Contemporary Themes and Research in Geography and G4 – Sustainability.
Students will need to undertake their own research on a variety of subjects.
The subject encourages students to understand global issues that they will face in their lives, for example climate change and sustainable resource use.
Important concepts and processes are studied in the context of real places at a local, regional, national and global scale.
How will I learn?
In the first year of the course, AS units are studied (which are G1 and G2) with the A- Level units being studied in the second year (G3 and G4).
Individual research and case studies are required for Units G1, G2 and G3. This research work may mean fieldwork at locations away from the school site.
The course is taught at Ysgol Brynrefail.
Ideally, you wll have a GCSE in Geography at grade C or above and, naturally, an interest in the subject. A grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics is considered an advantage.
The course is assessed through 4 written examinations (one for each unit).
You can go on to study Geography at university (or any other related subject such as Geology and environmental subjects).
Town and Country Planning, Conservation, Environmental Management, Education, Tourism and Travel, Land Management and Surveying, Agriculture and Meteorology to name but a few!
