Graphics BTEC National Diploma at Francis Combe Academy
The qualification is designed to give students a technical understanding of Graphics.
Students gain knowledge and skills in areas such as typography, illustration, branding and web design to produce vocational projects in graphic design. Students choose an optional unit in another art and design discipline which complements the subject and gives breadth to their practice. The qualification is for post 16 students Intending to gain employment in graphic design, possibly after further study in higher education.
This course Is equivalent to 2 A Levels and can be complemented with another creative A Level such as Art, Media or Product Design.
There are a total of 9 units to be covered, 4 of which are mandatory (group A), 4 further units from group B and 1 from group C.

General entry requirement for a 2 year programme of vocational courses is a mostly C/D grade profile at GCSE.
There are three main forms of assessment: external, internal and synoptic.
Students must complete and achieve at pass grade or above for all the units in group A.
Externally Assessed Units:
- Managing a Client Brief
- Developing and Realising Creative Intentions
Synoptically Assessed Unit:
- Professional Practice in Art and Design
Internally Assessed Units
- Graphics Materials,
- Techniques and Processes
- 5 further optional Units
This qualification is primarily designed to support progression to employment or an Apprenticeship in the area of graphics and support roles as a design assistant/trainee, trainee technical illustrator, trainee technical graphic design assistant, junior artworker, desktop publishing assistant, technical illustrator or junior graphic designer.
A significant proportion of recruitment in the creative sector Is at graduate level and students may wish to progress to further learning which will support entry to a further range of careers in the sector. The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and Is recognised by Higher Education providers as meeting admission requirements to relevant Foundation Degree and BTEC Higher National courses, such as:
- FdA Graphic Communication
- HND Graphic Design
When studied with other qualifications within the study programme, such as an A Level or BTEC Extended Certificate in a different complementing sector such as Media, Business or Computing, students can progress into higher education on full degree courses for example:

- BA (Hons) Information and Interface Design
