Horticulture - Level 2 Diploma (AGR1) at Barnsley College

Course description

Working with plants, from designing and building a new city park to developing new food crops can be incredibly rewarding and there is
a wealth of career options for you to choose from.

Based at our Wigfield Farm campus, you will gain practical experience within the land-based industry as well as developing your skills and horticulture theory knowledge.

Course content

You will cover the following topics:

  • Prepare ground for planting
  • Plant container grown plants
  • Care for a planted area
  • Plant a container for display
  • Apply fertiliser
  • Prune deciduous spring flowers
  • Propagate indoors
  • Propagate by stem cuttings
  • Construct a paved area
  • Use a pedestrian controlled mower
  • Design a contemporary style garden

Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3/D or above including English or Level 1 in Horticulture
  • Acceptance onto the programme is also subject to an interview


You will be assessed by a series of assignments. There is no formal end examination.


Financial information

If your total annual household income is less than £35,000 you could be eligible for financial support through our Learner Support Fund to help with travel. You don’t have to pay this money back. Apply to the Learner Support Fund.

You can pick up a Learner Support Fund application form from Student Services on the ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus.

Food and Essential Equipment

Guaranteed bursaries

If you are aged between 16 and 18 and currently living on your own and in receipt of income support, in care or leaving care, you could be eligible for a non-repayable bursary of up to £1,200 per year.*

FREE bus services!

We realise that getting to and from college might not be very easy for everyone so we have funded four free return bus services for our students. They go to and from the Old Mill Lane campus which is just a few minutes’ walk from our Sixth Form college campus.

Stocksbridge via Penistone > Old Mill Lane campus

South Elmsall via South Kirkby, Hemsworth, Kinsley, Fitzwilliam and Ryhill > Old Mill Lane campus

Rotherham via Kimberworth, Ecclesfield and Chapeltown > Old Mill Lane campus

These bus routes are completely free for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route operates to ensure students get to college before lessons start and a return service is provided after lessons finish.
