Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School

Course description

This course will not only develop your practical skills in Drama, but will enrich your aesthetic awareness of theatre. Through a combination of analysis, discussion and active participation, you will gain a fuller understanding of the performing arts. You should be keen on acting and have some feeling for the visual and technical aspects of theatre.

Assessment

Component 1: Devising. 40% of the qualification

Component 2: Text in Performance. 20% of the qualification

Component 3: Theatre makers in Practice

Written Exam: 2h 30m. 40% of the qualification

Future opportunities

An A level award in Drama and Theatre is accepted by all universities, as an academic as well as a practical discipline, in its own right. Highly appropriate for degrees in: Drama, Theatre Studies, Acting, Musical Theatre, Performing Arts, Creative and Media Arts, Theatre in Education, Directing. Combines well with other subjects such as: Psychology, English Literature, Sociology, Politics, Business. Related careers could be: Acting, directing, producing, designing, stage management, theatre administration, review writing, drama and speech therapy, journalism, law, psychology, social work, advertising, business, teaching, lecturing.

Students visit the theatre regularly to review the work of professional productions, developing their creative and aesthetic awareness.

Students have had extensive experience of performing in plays and attending workshops and productions at the Young Vic theatre. Many have also obtained work placements at the theatre. The school has had a firm relationship with theatre for 18 years. Students have been successful in becoming members of the National Youth Theatre. Students have achieved distinctions in Guildhall Drama examinations. Students have received a variety of workshops from theatre practitioners. Students are encouraged to instruct, perform and promote the subject to students in lower years.
