Sports Turf Apprenticeship - Greenkeeper or Groundsman - (Level 2 or 3) at Askham Bryan College

Course description

Work-based learning and assessment at your place of work with some college-based study. Learners must be in a paid work placement to commence an apprenticeship programme, and would usually enter at the Level 2 Apprenticeship stage before progressing to the Level 3.

Course content

Course Themes*:

• Preparing ground and establishing turf and seed

• Health, condition and repair of sports turf

• Maintenance of sports turf

• Machinery maintenance

• Personal performance and effective working relationships

• Managing sports turf maintenance

• Managing resource requirements

• Machinery management

• Drainage systems

• Irrigation systems

• English and maths provision where applicable

*Course themes will be dependent and relevant to apprenticeship course level.  

Entry requirements

Level 2 Apprenticeship: Level 1 Maths and English equivalent to GCSE grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) or above, plus suitable and relevant employment and will be expected to work towards Level 2 Maths and English where this has not been achieved.

Level 3 Apprenticeship: Usually a Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or considerable work experience, plus suitable employment.  Applicants must be capable of achieving, or have achieved, Level 2 Maths and English.

Further study:

From Level 2 to Level 3 full time or Apprenticeship programmes. From Level 3 to degree courses such as the Foundation Degrees in Sports Surface Management.
