Further Mathematics AS level at Oldfield School

Course description

This course is to be taken in addition to A level Mathematics and is to be studied over the full two years.

Course content

What will I study?

The AS course is comprised of 3 units:

Mechanics 1: Mathematical models in mechanics; vectors; kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line; dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; statics of a particle; moments.

Further Pure Mathematics 1: Series; complex numbers; numerical solution of equations; coordinate systems; matrix algebra; proof.

Further Pure Mathematics 2: Inequalities; series; first and second order differential equations; further complex numbers; Maclaurin and Taylor series.

Entry requirements

A GCSE grade A*, plus a recommendation from your current teacher.


Examination Board – Edexcel

All modules are weighted equally and comprise one third of the AS grade. The examination for Mechanics will be taken in the summer of Year 12 with the remaining units examined at the end of Year 13.

Future opportunities

Some universities advise the study of Further Mathematics at AS in order to continue the subject on to degree level.

Am I suited to this course?

You would be well-suited to studying Further Mathematics if you:

  • have a logical mind and enjoy using Mathematics to solve problems in real life situations
  • want to develop your problem solving techniques
  • want to take your mathematical knowledge to a greater depth.

What other subjects does it complement?

As with AS Mathematics, this course complements a wide range of subjects. It will also enhance your A level Mathematics studies. The Mechanics unit has strong links to the AS Physics course.
