Sociology AS/A-Level at Highams Park School

Course description

The Sociology AS/A2 Level course involves a detailed study of society, social processes and social institutions from differing theoretical perspectives. We study, for example, institutions such as the family, education, crime & deviance and religion in order to understand their role in society.

Entry requirements

Students need to be inquisitive and have a real interest in people, and what motivates their behaviour. Students should also have an interest in social issues and current affairs. A commitment to further reading and an ability to write fluent and coherent essays are essential.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare for higher education in one or more of the Social Sciences such as Sociology, Development Studies, Anthropology or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Sociology and people such as a Social Worker, Teacher, Social Researcher or a more general position working within the Social Services. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the health and social care sectors.
