Mathematics A2 at University Academy Keighley

Course description

Mathematics is a sequential subject and AS Mathematics builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding established at GCSE. The AS and A2 courses encourage students to develop their understanding of the subject in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment.

Course content

Students are taught how to recognise how a situation may be represented mathematically and to understand the relationship between 'real world' problems and mathematical models and how these can be refined and improved. The course also aims to encourage students to develop an awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general. All units are assessed by exams lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. Calculators cannot be used for MPC1, the use of a scientific or a graphics calculator is allowed for all other units.

Entry requirements

Ideally you should have achieved at least a grade B on the Higher tier GCSE.  Students who achieve a grade C on the Higher GCSE will be considered on an individual basis

Assessment

Year Two - A2 Unit 1MD01 Decision 1 - MD01 introduces a new area of mathematics involving networks, matchings, algorithms and linear programming. The MD01 exam is taken in January of Y13. 16 2/3% of total A level mark Unit 2MPC3 Pure Core 3 & Pure Core 4 - these modules follow on from MPC1 and MPC2, they give you a greater range of mathematical techniques and a broader understanding of how they are applied. Trigonometry, integration, differentiation, exponentials and logarithms are studied in greater depth in these modules. 16 2/3 % each of total A level mark

Future opportunities

Possible progression: An A level in Mathematics is a highly regarded qualification; it will help you in many areas of further study. It proves that you are able to reason logically and understand the relationship between 'real world' problems and mathematical models. Mathematics is used as an aid in many further education courses.
