Sport (Rugby) BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma at Guildford College

Course description

The programme aims to provide relevant education and training leading to employment within the sports industry.

The programme reflects a vocational approach to a diversified industry and aims to give a learning experience combining theoretical course study with practical skills in a competitive environment.

There is the opportunity to learn from a variety of teaching staff with specialist subject knowledge in all areas of the syllabus. You will undertake units of study that are not often offered at most colleges such as sports massage.

You will have access to a variety of additional “bolt on” qualifications whilst studying the Level 3 BTEC including first aid, Level 2 CSLA, and RFU qualifications. Access to structured and varied training sessions by qualified sports coaches including a semi professional rugby player, strength and conditioning sessions to be undertaken each week in order to reach personal goals and develop overall performance and playing ability.

College teams for rugby are entered into the British Colleges competition and leagues resulting in regular fixtures and opportunities to participate. Students have access to a brand new sports hall and weights room to enhance their training.

The College has purpose built pitches for training, for football and rugby, as well as a weights room and sports hall. As well as this there are numerous local facilities including Surrey Sports Park (climbing, swimming, squash etc), Guildford Spectrum Centre (ice skating) and Quayside Water Sports (wakeboarding and waterskiing).

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grades A* - C, including Maths and English, or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above, or equivalent. You will also need to pass the reference and interview process.

Assessment

Written presentations, portfolios, verbal presentations, demonstrations and practicals. There will be clear College submission deadlines which will need to be met. Failure to meet these may result in failure to complete the course.

Financial information

Due to the specific nature of the course there are additional costs for clothing, visits, travel, outdoor activities etc. Fees are payable at enrolment.

Future opportunities

You could study the Level 3 Extended Diploma or work in coaching, sports development, fitness training or sales and marketing.

Further information

While it is not necessary to have a high level of physical fitness, students will be expected to undertake physical activity as part of the course.

All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.
