Home Economics - Textiles AS level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
You will learn to more advanced pracitcal skills, have the opportunity to design and make prodcuts of your choice. As well as improving your knowledge of fabrics their contruction and maintenance. You will also learn about the textile industry from designing through to the completion of the finished product.
Unit 1 - Written Examination: 2 hours (50% of total AS marks)
Unit 2 - Coursework: Approximately 50 hours (50% of total AS marks)
Section A - Materials, Components and Applications
You will have the opportunity to work and study a variety of textile materials so that you understand the characteristics, properties, cost and availability which influences the choice, of materials in design situations. You will also consider a wide range of compnents used in textile products.
Section B - Design & Market Influences
This gives you the opportunity to understand the basics of design and how it can be applied to textile products. At the same time it will encourage your capproach to designing and making quality products to meet specific needs of indentified users. You will also come to form an understnading of industrial and commercial practice which influences the market.
Section C - Process & Manufacture
This will encourage a broad knowledge of manufacturing systems used to make, finish and decorate materials for use as apparel fabrics, household and industrial uses. You should plan suitable production systems to produce prototypes which can take into account quality assurances and quality control. ICT is part of this section.
You will need to have an interest in fashion. You need to be aware that during the course you will do three pieces of practical coursework along with written coursework folders.
Therefore you willneed to be motivated to cope with the workload and be prepared to provide all the necessary fabrics and components.
It is not essential for you to have done D&T: Textiles at GCSE, however you will find it easier if you have. You need to have good practical and written and ICT skills.
Any career in fashion and fashion industries, though often you may find you will need to do an Art Foundation course before going on to University.
The subject is also accepted at a variety of other universities for other courses. However you should check with the university first for courses such as medicine and dentistry.
