Newcastle United Coach the Coach at Newcastle College

Course description

There are academic and vocational aspects of this course that will provide you with the specialist knowledge and skills to provide an insight into community coaching. You will be working with Newcastle United Foundation coaches on developing football coaching skills. A work placement with The Foundation is included and a guaranteed interview with The Foundation on completion of the course. It will help you to progress into higher education or gain employment. A high proportion of students from this course progress to the Newcastle College Foundation Degree in Applied Sports Coaching and Development. It is also recognised by employers and is good preparation for employment in the sport, leisure, health and fitness industry.
This course is over 1 year and after the first year you will gain a L3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport that is worth 60 credits. 

Course content

You will be working alongside Newcastle United Foundation coaches and get varied experience of football coaching.

You will study a variety of units which could include the following:-

Principles of Anatomy and Physiology , Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport , Psychology of Sport, Exercise, Health and Lifestyle, Sports Coaching, Fitness, Training and Programming, Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Sports Nutrition. 

Entry requirements

You will need at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths or a Level 2 Diploma with a Merit/Distinction grade profile and Level 2 English and maths, subject to an interview.


You will be assessed through practical observation, oral questions, written projects/assignments and discussions.

Future opportunities

If you successfully complete the course, you can progress to any of our Sport/Fitness-related Foundation 
This qualification is also an acceptable entry requirement for Degree/Foundation Degree courses run at other 
Higher Education institutions both in the region and across the country.

You will receive support from your tutor in terms of your application to University as well as having the opportunity to attend visits to academic institutions and Open Days.


There is a guaranteed interview on completion of the course with Newcastle Foundation.You could find employment in areas such as the sports and leisure industry, sports coaching in sports clubs and schools and health and fitness clubs.
