Course description

Course units include Health, Safety & Welfare, Sustainable Construction, Mathematics, Science & Materials, Building Services Science and a number of other mechanical and electrical engineering subjects related to building services engineering.

On successful  completion of the first year learners achieve the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma. The full Diploma is claimed at the end of the second year.

Outline of skills and knowledge

BTEC QCF Level 3 qualifications are designed to provide highly specialist work-related content. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to prepare for employment or provide career development opportunities for those already in work.

Entry requirements

Candidates must be employed in the building services or related sectors.

Candidates must have Mathematics and English Language skills at level 2 (e.g. GCSE grades C or above). Candidates without formal qualifications can take our initial assessments in mathematics and English to provide evidence of their functional skills capabilities.

All candidates are interviewed by the programme manager and should bring a reference from their employer and previous qualification certificates.

The twelve units have on average three assessments each. A typical unit will have two independently written coursework assignments and one class-based assessment completed under supervision.

Future opportunities

Successful candidates achieving merits or above overall are invited to enrol on our HNC programme. In recent years the college has had very good success rates for our level 3 and HNC courses with many students progressing further onto degree schemes in Building Services Engineering subjects.
