Beauty Therapy Level 2 Extended Diploma at Newton Abbot College

Course description

The Level 2 Extended Diploma in Beauty Therapy is based on the national occupational standards for Beauty Therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a Beauty Therapist.

Course content

Learning will take place in our onsite salon, through consultation with real clients and through a two-week block work placement in a commercial setting.  

Students will learn skills to complete all mandatory units that include:

  • Health safety and hygiene;
  • Consultation techniques and client care; 
  • Manicure treatments; 
  • Pedicure treatments; 
  • Waxing services;
  • Facial treatments;
  • Skin type analysis;
  • Eyebrow shaping services;
  • Eyelash and eyebrow tinting services;
  • Make-up applications;
  • Anatomy and physiology for beauty therapists.

In parallel, students will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills; all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed. 

In addition to completing mandatory units, students are required to complete four optional units: 

  • Gel polish applications; 
  • Manual tanning application;
  • Nail art application;
  • Process payment for beauty purchases.

Entry requirements

Ideally students will have achieved a minimum Grade 4 or above in both English and Mathematics at GCSE. However, if these grades are not achieved, course entry will be discussed on an individual basis.


Assessment will be based on 50% portfolio evidence, 30% external examination and 20% client based consultation and practical assessment of all mandatory skills.

Future opportunities

This course would lend itself to careers in the following areas:

  • Commercial salons;
  • Destination/day spas;
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings;
  • Care homes.

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare students for employment, they may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3.

Further information

Students will need genuine enthusiasm and commitment to Beauty Therapy. Students must be prepared to work in a team and independently on all tasks and assignments set. Students will work with real clients, therefore excellent attendance, punctuality and a commitment to the health and safety of others is essential.
