Core Maths AS Level at Ashfield School

Course description

Core Maths enables the study of mathematical topics in practical, real-life contexts. You will see the relevance of mathematics as you model the real world and develop skills which are readily transferable to either the real world or to your other studies.

Course content

Paper 1: Data Analysis, Maths for Personal Finance, Estimation.

Paper 2: Critical Analysis of Data Tables, the Normal Distribution, Probabilities and Estimation, Correlation and Regression.

Entry requirements

Five or more A* - C including Grade C or above at Higher Maths GCSE.

The course will be studied over 2 years and all units are assessed by written paper at the end of the second year. The use of a preliminary data sheet, which is issued two weeks before each of the examinations, familiarises students with the scenarios and the vocabulary that will be required in the examination.

Future opportunities

Career prospects are good. The course compliments other A levels which has some mathematical content including architecture, economic, social/natural sciences and hence related careers. The qualification will support entry into university with UCAS points equivalent to an AS Level. Some universities have suggested that in some cases it would be accepted if higher than a C was needed in GCSE Maths.
