Introduction to Electrical Installation City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma at Bedford College

Course description

If you are an aspiring electrician this course will give you an introduction to the basic skills you will need to carry out a range of electrical installation activities needed to start work in the industry, whilst also preparing you for entry to Level 2 study. Areas of study during this course will include an introduction to basic practical skills with a focus on domestic and commercial lighting and power circuits, and the theory associated with these activities. This full-time course will require you to attend for 4 days per week, and is designed to give you both practical and theoretical insight into the electrotechnical field. The course is tailored to give you the required level of understanding and underpinning knowledge to advance on to a Level 2 qualification.

Course content

This course will offer you both practical and theory lessons to develop the skills and knowledge required of the modern electrician. You will be trained from scratch at a fast pace in all aspects of the electrical field, looking in detail at health and safety, electrical principles, installation regulations; you will also gain practical training ranging from basic hand skills and using tools to installing a wide range of circuits.

During the course you will have the opportunity to study the following topics:

  • Electrical installation
  • Wiring and terminations
  • Fabrication techniques for electrical installation
  • Electrical science and technology
  • Maths and English


You will also have the opportunity to visit a local construction site to see first-hand the opportunities available to you. If you excel in all areas of the course you will also be recommended for work experience with local companies as opportunities arise. Depending on your entry assessment you will also have the opportunity to either take GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a keen interest in electrical installation, as well as evidence of studying at GCSE level (grades D-F) or successful completion of an entry level qualification. At interview you will be asked to complete a basic skills assessment.


You will be assessed through a combination of written and practical tasks.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to Electrical Installation Level 2, or another Level 2 course at Bedford College. If you find employment in the electrotechnical industry you can progress onto the Electrotechnical Installation Level 3 NVQ.

Further information

To take part in this course you will need to wear steel toe boots and provide your own note taking equipment and a scientific calculator. The cost of the required uniform/clothing is £20 and personal equipment will cost £10. The cost of all materials used in practical lessons is included in the enrolment fee. If you are aged 16-18 tuition fees, exam fees and College membership are free.

Our students have been on trips to look at how power stations operate and theme parks such as Alton Towers to see how rides work. The department runs both internal and external student competitions with other colleges with toolkits as prizes throughout the year. Every year we have local employers contacting us to recruit our best students, give talks on what they look for in prospective employees and giveaway prizes for the best and most improved students. Past students have gone on to work for major projects such as The Shard and Crossrail, to working as apprentices for the Red Bull Formula one team.
