Sociology A Level at Lawnswood School

Course description

AS Sociology provides an introduction to the study of society and of people and their behaviour. Students explore theories / explanation of patterns we find in society e.g. "Why are there differences in girls and boys achievement levels in school.

The course allows students the opportunity of developing essential knowledge and understanding of sociological thought and methods, applying a range of skills including discussion and debating.

Course content

The AQA specification allows pupils to develop knowledge of contemporary social processes and social changes. Students will be encouraged to develop their own social awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world.

Subject content areas in year 1 include:

Topic 1 - Education and Research Methods

Topic 2 – Family and Households.

In year 2 candidates will continue to focus on contemporary society but they should demonstrate a wider range of in depth knowledge and understanding and use highly developed skills of application, analysis, interpretation and evaluation.

Topic 3 -  Media

Topic 4 – Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods

Entry requirements

To study Sociology at A level you will need grade 5+ in GCSE English


Sociology GCE is assessed through 3 written papers. It is a linear course, assesed at the end of year 13. We offer the AQA specification.

Financial information

Students are encouraged to purchase one main course textbook, and expected to provide their own stationery.

Future opportunities

Sociology is a well-respected academic discipline which promotes progression to higher education/ careers. Previous students have gone into careers in social work, international development, law, politics, teaching and a wide range of degree subjects, including mathematics, law, criminology, sociology, social policy and many others.
