Course description

Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Certificate in Art and Design with a Fashion unit is equivalent to two GCSEs. The work covers fabric enhancement through colouration techniques and embellishment of textiles and showing a contextual understanding of other artists’ work. Sewing skills are developed as the students work to a fashion design brief.

Course content

BTEC Firsts in Art and Design have been developed in the art and design sector to focus on:

  • education and training for those who work or are intending to work in the art and design industry
  • providing opportunities for those who work or are intending to work in the art and design sector to achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 vocationally specific qualification
  • providing opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment in the art and design sector or to progress to highereducation vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National in Art and Design
  • providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

Assessment

Unit 1 2D and 3D Visual Communication:Learning a variety of fabric colouration techniques which develops fine mark-making skills.On completion of this unit you should:1 Be able to use mark-making and making skills2 Understand how ideas can be communicated using mark-making and making skills3 Be able to use formal elements, materials and techniques. 33% Unit 2 Contextual References in Art and Design:Show a understanding of other artists/art movement and show you can relate their work to yours.On completion of this unit you should:1 Know the influences of historical and contemporary art and design developments2 Understand historical and contemporary references to support their research anddevelopment of their own response3 Be able to present information about the work studied in an appropriate format. 33% Unit 7 Working with Fashion Design Briefs:Working to a fashion design brief and producing a fashion item using pattern making and sewing skills.On completion of this unit you should:1 Know how to develop ideas and final outcomes to meet fashion design briefs by selectingsuitable materials and techniques2 Be able to use pattern drafting techniques and processes3 Be able to use construction techniques and processes. 33%
