Environmental Sustainability BTEC at Bristol Metropolitan Academy

Course description

Environmental Sustainability is an increasingly important aspect of many modern businesses and local and global industries. The ‘green economy’ will provide jobs in Bristol, the UK and abroad and this course will introduce students to the ideas, science, legalities and wide-ranging work opportunities in this fast growing area.Throughout the course we will investigate fascinating topics that integrate science, our technological society and global and local citizenship.Our studies will include: the ecological interactions of plant and animal species , land management , conservation, soil science. Pollution and health, water and energy resources and their management.We will also look at globalised consumption patterns , waste management and recycling.This vocational course is highly practical and project based and includes partnership working with Avon Wildlife Trust at their Feed Bristol nursery and market garden , work with conservation experts at local City Farms and industry visits to recycling facilities and sustainable transport organisations . There is also a green entrepreneurship module for those aspiring to develop their own projects.

Entry requirements

Double Award GCSE Science – 2 x C grade or 2 x single GCSE Sciences – C grades or BTEC Science Level 2 Merit or GCSE Geography C(Science BTEC - Distinction, GCSE English and Maths - C grade preferred ) .A curious mind and willingness to learn outside the classroom is essential. ICT skills preferred.
