Health & Social Care - AS/A2 Level (Double Award) at St John Fisher Catholic Voluntary Academy

Course description

This is a brand new qualification for students who are interested ina career in health, social care or education. This qualification isn't about teaching learners how to care for babies or the elderly and the ill however it will provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding that will allow them to progress onto Higher Education on a health and social care related programme such as Health & Social Care, Nursing, Social Work or Early Childhood studies. Learners will learn by applying their skills, knowledge and understanding to tasks or activities that are relevant to what happens in health, social care and child care work places. Having an appreciation of what happens in the workplace will also help to prepare learners for continuing their education in this sector. The OCR have worked with universities and employers to ensure that relevant transferable skills, knowledge and understanding that they are looking for in prospective applicants are included in the courses. There are 4 possible courses at Level 3 which is the equivalent to 1 A level.

Students will study 3 units:

Unit 1

Building positive relationships in health and social care (coursework)

Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care (Exam)

Health, safety and security in health and social are (Exam)

 

Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Health & Social Care

Equivalent to one A level

Students will study units 1, 2 & 3 plus:

 

Unit 4

Anatomy and physiology for health and social care (exam)

Year 13

(Double Award)

Unit 9

Supporting people with learning disabilities (coursework)

Unit 10

Nutrition for health (coursework)

 

Cambridge Technical Foundation Diploma in Health & Social Care

Equivalent to 2 A levels

Students will study units 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9 plus:

The impact of long term physiological conditions (coursework)

Year 12

Safeguarding (exam)

Unit 5

Infection control (coursework)

Personalised and a person-centred approach to care (exam)

Assessment

The qualification is assessed in two distinct ways. Where indicated the units will be assessed externally and comprise of a 1 hour written exam. The other units will be internally assessed using various assignments, which will allow students to apply the knowledge that they gain in a variety pf ways and in different settings. An ideal support for this course will be to take the CAREER READY PROGRAMME which offers unique opportunities to develop skills and gain valuable experiences in the world of work.
