Mathematics A Level at St Joseph's Catholic Academy
Students follow the Edexcel syllabus for both AS and A2. Students will meet some familiar topics such as algebra, trigonometry, statistics and probability, and will study these topics to a greater depth and level of understanding, as well as studying new topics like differentiation, integration, sequences and series, and mechanics.
Core 1: This covers Pure Maths topics such as: Algebra, Series, Coordinate Geometry and an introduction to Calculus.
Core 2: This covers additional Pure Maths topics such as: Trigonometry, Differentiation, Integration, Binomial series Exponentials & Logarithms.
Statistics 1: Topics covered include: Representation of Sample data, Probability, Correlation, Regression, and the Normal Distribution.
All units are assessed by external examination in June of Year 12.
Core 3: This builds on the knowledge gained at AS level and includes topics such as: Functions, Numerical Methods, and Proof, as well as further study of Trigonometry and Differentiation.
Core 4: This is the final Pure Maths module to be studied, and covers additional work on Binomial Series, Differentiation and Integration, as well as Vectors.
Mechanics 1: Topics covered include: Forces, Constant Acceleration, Projectiles, Kinematics and Newton’s Laws of Motion.
All units are assessed by external examination in June of Year 13.

Mathematics is a highly desirable A level for those entering the field of mathematics, engineering, science, geography economics or any social science.
