Religious Studies A level at Boroughbridge High School

Course description

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics is for those who enjoy learning and who are interested in exploring and challenging ideas.  Discussion forms an important part of the learning process and students need to participate thoughtfully and show respect for the ideas of others.

The study of philosophy and ethics helps you to think logically and clearly about issues that affect the whole of life and success will help you to feel confident about your thinking and decision making.  With a qualification in Religious Studies, you could go on to Higher Education, at college or university.  THe skills developed in Religious Studies could be particularly useful for careers in law, education, social work, politics, medicine, administration or the media.

Course content

The A level course comprises of two components: Philosophy and Religion, and Ethics and Religion.

The Philosophy and Religion component includes the study of one religion and the following philosophical issues:

  • Arguments for the existence of God
  • Evil and suffering
  • Religious experience
  • Religious language
  • Miracles
  • Self and life after death
  • The nature and function of religion

The Ethics and religion component includes the study of one religion in relation to the following issues:

  • Ethical theories
  • Issues of human life and death
  • Issues of animal life and death
  • Introduction to meta ethics
  • Free will and moral responsibility 
  • Conscience
  • Bentham and Kant
