English Language AS/A2 at Onslow St Audrey`s School

Course description

This course provides a thorough
grounding in the English Language
looking at methods of exploring both
written and spoken language texts.
The course provides opportunities to consider how the English
language works within different contexts and how those contexts
impact upon language production and reception. You will be
encouraged to consider different audiences and purposes and also
to consider your own language use.
You will develop an understanding of the approaches and methods
needed to analyse a range of everyday texts. You will need a
genuine interest in understanding how language creates meaning,
secure writing skills, an open mind and a willingness to enter into
debate and discussion.
In the first year, you will study how to categorise a range of texts
looking at classification and linguistic methods. You will also look
at how language produces cultural values and assumptions within
the contexts of power, gender and technology. There are also
two pieces of coursework to complete which will require you to
produce a folder comprising of two pieces of original writing, and
two commentaries which explore the writing process and assess
the success of the individual pieces you have written.
In the second year you will be expected to develop your skills
and knowledge from your AS studies, with an additional focus on
two new topics, the acquisition of language by children and the
development of and changes in English over time. There is also a
coursework unit to develop your ability to explore and analyse
language data through a variety of methods. The coursework folder
will comprise of two individual pieces of writing; firstly, a language
investigation and secondly, a media text.
This course is an excellent basis for further study or entry into a
range of professions.

English GCSE A*-C*APS: 40 or above
