Intermediate Apprenticeship

  • BTEC Diploma in Applied Science/H.N.C. in Chemistry or Biology

Length of the course - 24 Months Approximately

During the Apprenticeship, you will cover areas such as:

  • Supporting Laboratory Activities
  • Assisting Scientists and Technicians in day to day lab functions
  • Adhere to Health & Safety procedures and guidelines
  • Trial new practical activities when requested.
  • Store correctly, and monitor the condition of labels on chemical products and electrical apparatus taking account of safety procedures and COSHH regulations to ensure the safety of the pupils and staff.
  • Dispose of waste materials according to regulations.
  • Carry out risk assessments for technician activities.

Who is it for?

There are many laboratory-based companies, where you can start a career in the science industry and you don’t always need academic qualifications to start with!

Pharmaceutical research companies, where they develop and test new medicine; Schools, where you would prepare experiments for students; The NHS, have roles including sample testing and research. There are many other companies like food and chemical industries. Daily tasks in the laboratory may include: making assays, testing compounds and learning how to use scientific equipment.

In some cases, individuals can work towards professional recognition as a science technician, with the society of Biology, who are governed by the science council.

You may not need to have academic qualifications to start a career as a laboratory science technician; however, some employers may prefer you have a good standard of general education such as Maths and Science.

Becoming a laboratory science technician apprentice is a great way to gain the theory and skills needed for a career in the science industry.

In order to start a Laboratory Operations Apprenticeship at either Level 2 or 3, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.

Entry requirements

In order to start a Laboratory Operations Apprenticeship at Level 2, you will require GCSEs in English and Maths. 

Individual employers may look for specific qualifications, these are stated on each Apprenticeship Vacancy, this may include A level qualifications.

Financial information

Aged 16-18
Fully funded

Aged 19-23
Fully funded for employers with less than 1000 employees. For employers with 1000+ employees, please contact us for further details.

Aged 24 and over
Total People require employers to make a contribution towards the cost for all learners aged 24 years and over, embarking on an Apprenticeship.

Future opportunities

You will then be in a position to progress up the career ladder to more senior jobs such as a supervisor, manager or develop your technical skills to become a specialist in Non-Destructive Testing, Quality Management, Engineering Design or Structural Engineering.
