History AS/A Level at Hartlepool Sixth Form College
History is about the study of people and their actions in the past, but this study will also equip you with skills that will be useful in your future career.
History is concerned with trying to reconstruct events and understand the actions of people in the past. At the end of the course you will have developed skills in the following areas: the evaluation and analysis of information, the ability to weigh up evidence and to communicate complex ideas effectively.
You will study two units at AS. The first unit is entitled Communism and Democracy in the Twentieth Century; this will include a study of Civil Rights in the USA 1945-68 and also Russia in Revolution 1881-1924.
The second unit encompasses an in depth study of the impact of War on Britain, looking at the Crimean War, the Boer War and World War One.
Two units will also be covered at A2. The first unit comprises an analysis of the conflicting historical debates surrounding Nazi Germany.
A2 will also incorporate an historical enquiry into modern Irish History from a range of options.
In your first year there is a choice between two routes :you can study Religion and the State in Early Modern Europe or Britain and the USA in the Twentieth Century. This choice will allow you to specialise in the area of History that really interests you; whether it be Tudor England or the struggle for Civil Rights in the USA. In the second year you will study either the Witch Craze in Britain, Europe and North America, c1580-1750 or Ireland and the Union, c1774-1923. You will also have the opportunity to complete an independently researched historical enquiry on a topic of particular interest to you, choices will include Nazi Germany and the Russian Revolution.
Minimum of 5 A*-C GCSEs with B preferred in subject of choice. Please get in touch for clarification.
Assessment will be through three examined units and one centre- assessed piece of coursework.
History degrees are an extremely popular choice for many of our students, it is a well-regarded degree with a great deal of options available according to institution. History also works well as a joint honours, especially with Politics, English or Archaeology. History provides the skills necessary for a range of professions.The subject knowledge acquired allows students to work in the heritage sector or in education. Alternatively, the valuable skills that are developed mean History students often go onto work in the legal profession, in the civil service or in the media
