Course description

Learn about the design and manufacture of products. Understand why products like the I-Pod, the Coca Cola bottle and Zippo lighter have become design classics. Design and make your own product. Work in your chosen area (graphics, textiles or resistant materials) and work on ‘live’ projects. You will have the opportunity to use the latest CAD/CAM technology and match your project work to your career aims or areas of interest. Learn about how designers are responding to global issues such as poverty and the environment and develop the skills to be a designer, architect or engineer and make the first step to a rewarding career. Combines well with a range of subjects to give you the career you want.

Course content

You will complete a folio of design and make projects during the AS year. You will focus on problem solving and creative designing using a wide range of modelling techniques. Much of your time will be spent experimenting and modelling with different materials and manufacturing methods so that you are able to really understand how your design can be created. You will keep a sketch book and e folder that records your experiments, and the design and development of your products. The knowledge gained from your practical experiments will enable you to plan cost effective ways your products can be manufactured. The topics you will study will include a range of materials, and manufacturing techniques relevant to the products you will design and manufacture. Traditional practical skills are combined with modern day techniques and ICT; you will have the opportunity to use two CAD (2D Design) and 3D modelling (Solidworks).

Entry requirements

Plus a Grade C in a Design and Technology subject or a related subject like Art and Design is desirable but not essential. Those without a D&T background at GCSE would be advised to attend extra workshops during the first term to update their skills and knowledge.

Assessment

Year 12 AS: Prod 1 - Examination 50% AS / 25% total A level. Prod 2- coursework Portfolio 50% AS / 25% total A level Year 13 A: Prod 3 - Examination 25% total A level. Prod 4 – single coursework assignment 25% total A level

Future opportunities

3D design could develop the skills to lead you into a number of exciting career paths. Product Design & automotive design but what about computer generated cartoons? Or maybe CAD for industry appeals to you more? This course could take you into architecture, teaching, manufacturing, advertising or engineering.
