Animal Management BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Grantham College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management is a two year course completing 180 credits - equivalent to the completion of three A levels.

Course content

The course is a mix of both practical and theoretical work. You will progress through the qualification by working in a realistic workplace environment supported by taught theory sessions, work experience placements and by the completion of assignments. This course will give you a broad base of experience to prepare you for work in the industry or for progression to Higher Education if you achieve the required point profile.

The course covers a wide variety of units across the two years. Year one covers the units required for completion of the 90-credit diploma. Units covered in year 2 include:

  • Animal Biology
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Investigative Project
  • Work Experience (300 Hours - mandatory)
  • Animal Nutrition
  • Exotic Animal
  • Health and Husbandry
  • Wildlife Management and Rehabilitation
  • Animal Breeding and Genetics
  • Pet Store Theory

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (Grade A - C to include Science and English) Alternatively, a minimum of a merit in an animal related Level 2 Diploma or equivalent with Science and English.


Practical, written assignments for all units

Financial information

Full Time Further Education courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.  Exam resit fees may apply if and when applicable.

Future opportunities

Students have the potential to progress to a Higher Education course, however direct entry to full time employment or an animal based apprenticeship are also possible career paths. Career opportunities within the animal industry on successful completion of the Subsidiary Diploma may include: Kennel/cattery supervisor, Assistant dog groomer, rescue centre supervisor, wildlife rehabilitation officer.
