Barbering Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship at New College Durham

Course description

This apprenticeship will allow students to work within a real working environment learning new Barbering skills, earning a wage and gaining a qualification at the same time. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes Apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of Apprentice's training takes place within the salon / barbershop placement however they do attend college each week to allow them to develop practical and theoretical skills required to carry out a barbering service.

The course is designed for students wishing to develop Barbering skills within colouring, cutting and styling men's hair. The apprentice National Minimum Wage applies to all 16 to 18 year old apprentices and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. If the apprentice is aged 19 and / or has completed the first year of their Apprenticeship, the employer must pay the National Minimum Wage appropriate for their age. 

Course content

As part of the Apprentice framework you will also study Functional skills English and Math's up to Level 1, Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS).


  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Cut Men's hair using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men's hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in the hair
  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Assist with Shaving services
