Barbering Services Level 2 at The Maltings College

Course description

This Level 2 qualification is a gateway to the Level 3 diploma which can be undertaken within the college setting or as an apprenticeship within a salon.

The course will provide you with the foundations to start your future in a barber shop. Not only does it provide you with knowledge and practical skills, it also equips you with the skills that employers are looking for.

We are unique in that we also have a strong focus on confidence and people skills. Our salon reflects that of a real working environment, providing you with the skills needed to succeed.

Our lecturers have experience in the hairdressing field, including staff members who began their careers as apprentices at TONI&GUY and worked their way up to train barbers and men’s hairdressers.

Course content

3 days in college.

2 day work experience.

We operate a working day from 9.00 am until 4.30 pm and one late evening session until 8.00 pm.

When you learn at The Maltings College you are gaining the knowledge and skills you need for work within the hair and barbering industry. You will gain valuable hands on work experience within a salon environment.

You will learn how to: ·

  • work in the hair industry
  • perform salon reception duties
  • display stock in a promotional way
  • cut and clipper men’s hair
  • cut men’s facial hair
  • colour and style men’s hair
  • understand health and safety in the workplace
  • conduct client consultations for hair services
  • shampoo and condition the hair and scalp

Entry requirements

To apply for a Level 2 course you need to be either: 

Progressing from completion of a Level 1 course and/or;  

Hold three or more GCSEs at grade D or above.


Multiple Choice Examination.

Portfolio of Evidence.

Practical Demonstration / Assignment.

Task-based Controlled Assessment.

Financial information

Financial assistance for meals, transport, course uniform and equipment is available for students who meet the criteria set out by the DFE.

Future opportunities

Into employment as a barber/men's hairdresser in salons, barber shops, spas, cruise liners and many more.
