Caring for Children Level 1 Certificate at Newbury College

Course description

Build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people. This course is aimed at people who are interested in starting a career in childcare or health and social care. Learners will attend supported tutorials and independent study sessions. You will be required to wear uniform when on work placement. The process for collecting this will be gone through after induction at college. We encourage learners feedback about the course and encourage a good attendance at review evenings.


The course covers a wide variety of topics including:- Growth and Development of young children, Human Growth and Development, Children's Play, Preparing for your next steps, Science Activities, Music Activities, Health and Safety, Craft Activities, Play, Self Development, Healthy Living, Healthy Eating and Money Management. We will be carrying out a skills project throughout the year which includes spending up to 4 weeks in a childcare setting.

Entry requirements

You are required to have 4 GCSEs at grade E or above. If you do not have GCSEs we can offer a place after completing a successful skill builder assessment and attending a successful interview.


You can be assessed by carrying out tasks in the class room, through discussion, the use of diagrams and pictures and through small written assignments.
