Physical Education AS Level at Corby Business Academy
What is AS Physical Education?
Sport - a global community.
This course looks at views of PE and sport and their on-going developments. If you are interested in sport and PE and how they have changed over time then this is the course for you. You will be given the chance to research and study sport in the local, national and international arenas.
The new AS PE course has been designed to ensure that you get a chance to not only study the principles of PE and sport but also participate in, reflect upon and coach sporting aspects giving you a more 'hands on' experience of the World of Sport and how it affects our every day lives. You will have the chance to take on the roles of 'performer',
- review your current participation in physical activity.
- identify opportunities locally, nationally and internationally.
- learn about sport, from the grass roots to the elite level, and the developments of competitive sport.
- Study healthy lifestyles, fitness and training, and preparation for sports performance.
Is this for me?
Are you hard working and highly motivated? Do you enjoy participating in PE and sport? Are you confident in sport performance? Do you have a thirst to learn more about the World of Sport? If you answer yes to all these questions then you are ready to join the AS PE course.
During the year course you will develop a wide range of sporting knowledge and transferable skills for both the world of work and further education. You will study:
- Healthy and Active Lifestyles, including:
- physiological aspects,
- fitness and
- Opportunities and Pathways, including:
- competitive developments,
- talent development,
- sporting pathways,
- lifelong involvement and
- long-term athlete development.
In addition to your core studies you will also develop essential employment related skills, known as Key Skill Developments at Level 3, in ICT, communication, application of number, improving learning and performance, problem solving and working with others.
You will need a minimum of 5 C's at GCSE, preferably including Maths, English and Biology. Having a grade C or above in GCSE PE would be beneficial but not essential.
This comes in two parts:
You complete four coursework tasks which mean you carry out research into the structure, provision and analysis of sport and physical activity.
You also develop your own performance in two chosen roles from a choice of three (performer, leader and official) and record your performance over a period of time.
You write a study about local level sporting provision, followed by a study of the provision for national level sport.
Lastly, you will produce an analysis of your own performances.
You will complete a 1 hour and 30 minute examination paper which is set and marked by Edexcel. This is a question-and-answer booklet made up of short-answer and extended-writing type questions.
What can I do at the end of the course?
Many students choose to continue studying a sport related course at university, for example in anatomy and physiology, sport psychology, sport development, teaching, to name but a few. However, AS PE will allow you to gain access to any university as it can add to the 'point score' required for university entrance.
If university is not your desire then this course can assist you with the basic knowledge to obtain jobs in the Corby Borough Council which are sport and recreation related, for example.
Physical Education and Sport are relevant to many careers, including:
