WHAT DOES THE SUBJECT INCLUDE?

An understanding of science and how to perform experiments in the laboratory and in the field. Units range from principles and applications of science, scientific Investigation, laboratory techniques and experimental skills, to disease, microorganisms, human biology, inorganic and organic chemistry and forensic evidence collection and analysis.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements are 5 GCSEs grade 4 (C) or above which should include; Science, Maths and English. Relevant Level 2 BTEC qualifications are taken into account.  Appropriate work experience is also considered.

Successful college interview.

Assessment

As much teaching as possible is done through practical work and other student-centred exercises, which will enable you to develop essential laboratory skills and the ability to take responsibility for your own studies.

Future opportunities

On completion of this course you will have the necessary qualification to enter a range of Higher Education courses at University. Or should you prefer to go straight into industry the course will give you industry standard skills to work as a lab technician. The applied science industry offers huge potential for learners interested in the sector.

The UK is currently regarded as a world leader in sectors including renewable energy, space, low carbon, pharmaceutical, utilities, automotive, agri-food and bioscience. Students completing this course would be suitable for progressing to technician roles in health care, oil, gas, electricity, food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, forensic or transport equipment.
