Further Mathematics AS/A2 Level at Sheringham High School and Sixth Form Centre
The maths department at Sheringham Sixth Form has a well earned reputation for success. In 2013, 70% of our Maths A2 students achieved an A* – B grade. The course aims to expand your knowledge of Maths into the more advanced areas where it can be used to tackle more and more complicated problems.
By building up your knowledge of the different techniques you will become more confident in trying to solve more realistic problems by mathematical modelling, problem solving skills, decision making, etc.
You will learn to read and understand information given in a mathematical form as well as show your own ideas in the rigorous and logical fashion demanded by the subject – this is a language which is common throughout the world. The appropriate and efficient use of calculators and computers is developed throughout the course.
The A level is made up of many modules that can be combined to give A and AS levels at both Maths and Further Maths. These modules are divided into Pure Maths, Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Maths.
Pure Maths (C1…C4, FP1…FP3) This advances your understanding of functions, extending into the new area of calculus. The course extends your knowledge of algebra and trigonometry.
Statistics (S1, S2) This teaches you to analyse and summarise data in order to arrive at conclusions and make predictions. You will learn about probability techniques.
Mechanics (M1, M2, M3) This looks at how mathematical models can be used to predict how objects move and respond to forces – e.g. a satellite in orbit around the earth.
Decision Maths (D1, D2) Decision Maths teaches systems to help you make the best decisions. It has applications in business and real life to minimise and maximise variables such as time and money.
The course is assessed by formal examination in each of the units. There is one exam sessions in May/June. Modules are equally weighted.
• For AS Further Maths you need modules FP1, D1 and D2
• For A2 Further Maths you need modules FP2 and/or FP3 and applied modules.
Further Maths students “mix and match” some of their module scores to achieve the two highest grades.
Maths A level is a powerful qualification equally respected by all institutes of Higher Education as well as employers. It is essential for many science and engineering courses and careers as well as being desirable for medicine.
