Physical Education A Level at The Knights Templar School

Course description

The specification in Sport and Physical Education stipulates a course of study that expands on many of the concepts already encountered at Key Stage 4. It provides a natural progression for candidates who have studied GCSE Physical Education, as well as a transition for those intending to study related courses at a Higher Education level. It also provides a balanced and broad based course, worthwhile in its own right.

The topic areas are as follows:

  • Unit 1 Physiological & Psychological factors affecting performance. Opportunities for and effects of participation in a healthy lifestyle.
  • Unit 2 Coursework (Practical) Choose 2 roles from performer, coach or official in either the same or 2 different sports. Perform, analyse and evaluate a range of skills and techniques in these 2 roles.

  • Unit 3 Ways to optimise performance using Physiological, Psychological and Social/Contemporary factors.
  • Unit 4 Coursework (Practical) Choose 1 role from performer, coach or official in 1 sport. Perform, analyse & evaluate a range of skills and techniques in your chosen role in a competitive situation.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths, for a full level 3 programme.

It is not essential to have taken GCSE Physical Education, but a grade B or above in science based subjects is necessary. Overall, a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the world of sport both in practice and theory would be an essential requirement.
