AS/A2 Biology at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Horncastle

Course description

The course is a mixture of traditional topics, like Cell Biology and Biochemistry and recent topics such as Genetic Engineering. A field trip to Gibraltar Point to study Ecology is an interesting and informative part of the Upper Sixth year. COURSE STRUCTURE

The AS Course consists of three modules: 1. Biology and Disease 2. The Variety of Living Organisms 3. Practical Skills Assessment (EMPA) Externally Marked Practical Assignment The A2 course also consists of three modules: 1. Populations and Environment 2. Control in Cells and in Organisms 3. Practical Skills Assessment (EMPA) Externally Marked Practical Assignment

GENERAL COMMENTS

Science and Additional Science GCSEs are required for this course, although some students will have studied Separate Science - Biology. Within modern Biology there are lots of biochemical topics and being a quantitative science, confidence with Maths and Chemistry would be an advantage.

Entry requirements

In order to study AS level Biology you will need to have at least grade B in GCSE Biology or in Additional Science. If you have any questions regarding the A level Biology course please see Mrs Hunter or any member of the Biology Department.

Future opportunities

PROGRESSION

This course is suitable as an end in itself. However, it is an excellent foundation for Higher Education courses in Biological Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science.
