Mathematics AS/A Level at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College

Course description

At RTSFC we offer a full range of Maths courses at AS and A Level, so you can choose the course which suits you. As well as A Level Mathematics, we also offer A Level Further Maths and A Level Use of Maths, so be sure to read each course thoroughly to decide which is best for you.

Course content

We follow the MEI Structured Mathematics course, examined by OCR. The core units are Pure Maths, (which extends your knowledge of Algebra), Trigonometry and Geometry and we also introduce Calculus. Mechanics studies forces and moving objects and relates closely to Physics. Statistics extends your knowledge of statistics and probability, and is very useful for many other subjects including Biology, Geography, Psychology and other Social Sciences. Decision Mathematics is about solving real life problems such as how to construct networks. It is particularly useful for Computing and Business students.

Students taking Physics must choose Mechanics; students not taking Physics may do either, but are strongly advised to choose Decision. There is a small amount of coursework in Core 3.

Entry requirements

  • 6 GCSE’s at Grade B or above, including GCSE English Language
  • GCSE Maths at Grade A is recommended.

Financial information

Graphic calculators are an essential tool for Maths courses and are available through college at a discount of £50. Students taking Maths courses have a course fee of £10 to cover the cost of worksheets and exam papers for the year.

Future opportunities

A-Level Mathematics is highly valued in a wide range of careers and professions, as it provides good evidence of the ability to assemble facts and data and to think logically and clearly. It is accepted almost everywhere as a good entry qualification, for practically every subject at degree level. It is a necessary subject for anyone interested in a scientific, engineering or statistics-related career.

The double qualification of A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics is very powerful in applying for a wide range of university courses and careers. AS or A Level Use of Mathematics is a very good course for a student who needs maths to support other subjects, but does not want to go on to study Maths, Physics or some Engineering courses at University.
