Engineering (Marine) City & Guilds Certificate Level 2 at Fareham College

Course description

This course is designed to provide you with a specialist work-related qualification and training in marine engineering. It provides sound preparation for those seeking an apprenticeship or progression to a higher level course such as the National Diploma.

In the last two units, you will learn about marine diesels engines, how they work, how to identify faults and how to service them. You will also carry out routine maintenance tasks on the engines and learn about gearboxes, propellers and other means of marine propulsion.

For those interested in a career in marine engineering, there are many different areas to work in. There are currently 720 different companies operating in the marine engineering industry in the UK, with the boat building and leisure marine equipment sectors predicted to grow over the next few years. Alternatively, successful students may wish to follow a career in the Navy or Merchant Navy.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above.


Assessment is largely by coursework and exams.

Financial information

A full CEMAST uniform and safety equipment must be purchased by new students when they join. This will include overalls, steel toe cap safety shoes, safety glasses and a polo shirt to be worn when on campus.

Future opportunities

Progression to a Level 3 Marine Engineering qualification.

On completion of your course you could take on roles such as:

  • Marine engineering maintenance fitter
  • Marine engineering maintenance technician
  • Marine engineering technician
  • Marine engineer officer (Merchant Navy)
