Physics AS Level at Queens Park Community School

Course description

Unit 1
Core Physics I
(50% of the total qualification)
 
Working as a Physicist, Mechanics, and Electric Circuits.
As well as a range of questions, the exam will include a data analysis task drawing on topics from the whole AS specification.
 
Unit 2
Core Physics II
(50% of the total qualification)
Working as a Physicist, Materials, and Waves and Particle Nature of Light.
As well as a range of questions, the exam will include a short article question which
will draw on topics from the whole AS specification.

To progress from year 12 to year 13, you will be expected to have achieved at least a D grade D in the AS Physics exams at the end of Year 12. The A level exams at the end of year 13 assess your learning over the whole 2 years.

At the end of the academic year, we offer a 2 night and 3 day visit to the
Large Hadron Collider Particle Accelerator at CERN, Geneva, and other sites of interest in the area.

Entry requirements

You will need to have achieved Grade 6 in either Combined Science GCSE or Triple Science GCSE, and a Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

This qualification will give students opportunities to use relevant apparatus and techniques to develop and demonstrate specific practical skills. Students will be assessed separately for the Science Practical Endorsement. The Endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for this qualification, but the result will be recorded on the student’s certificate. To achieve a pass, students must demonstrate that they are competent in all of the practical skills listed in the subject content requirements
for Physics.
 
Overall, a minimum of 40% of the marks across the three A level physics papers will be
awarded for mathematics at grade 5 or above.

Future opportunities

This qualification supports progression into higher education such as embarking on degree-level courses in Physics, Engineering, Electronics, Medicine, Dentistry or Environmental Science.
