Core Mathematics at Ilfracombe Academy

Course description

This new qualification is designed for students who achieve an A* to C in GCSE Mathematics, would like to continue to improve their mathematical understanding in the application of mathematics to real life problems, but choose not to continue with AS Level or A Level Mathematics.

The course will support student progression in many other level 3 courses such as A level Biology, Business Studies, Health and Social Care, Geography and IT.

The course will develop students’ understanding and ability to apply mathematics and become equipped to apply for employment or higher apprenticeships in a wide range of industry sectors and professional training. It also helps to prepare learners for the mathematical requirements of a number of higher education courses.

Core Maths is distinct from GCE AS and A2 Level Mathematics as learners consolidate mathematical techniques that can be directly applied to real life contexts.

It is a smaller but complimentary Level 3 qualification which can be taken alongside 3 - 4 other A Level subjects and has 2 hours of lessons per week.
