Course description

This apprenticeship is for learners who would like to develop advanced skills in business and administration taking responsibility for their own work and decision making.

Course content

The Advanced Apprenticeship in Business and Administration is made up of a combination of qualifications:
  • Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration - This qualification supports learners to build advanced knowledge and understanding to develop performance in the workplace.
  • Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT will be embedded into the apprenticeship at the appropriate level.
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) - Generic skills that are essential to life, learning and work; these are integrated into the apprenticeship.
The learner will spend most of the time working with the employer gaining valuable
experience and contributing to the administrative function. The learner will have a core job or area of responsibility, which they can focus on and take ownership of. In addition the opportunity to gain wider experience is essential.
The learner will develop core skills in:
  • Planning own work and time
  • Managing professional development
  • Principles of business
  • Communication systems/processes
The learner will gain core knowledge of:
  • Equality diversity legislation
  • Health and safety
  • Employment law
  • Security and confidentiality
Optional units will be selected to develop skills and knowledge in areas that may include:
  • Developing IT use in business
  • Project management
  • Document design
  • Developing presentations
  • Contribute to innovation
  • Design and develop information systems
  • Deliver and monitor customer service
  • Deliver excellent customer service

Entry requirements

There are no specified entry requirements; however, it is advisable that learners have a wide range of responsibilities and a good standard of English and maths.


This apprenticeship is assessed through the completion of online tests and work-based competence assessments

Financial information

Apprenticeship training is fully funded for learners up to the age of 18. For learners aged 19+ (who do not have an existing qualification at level 4 or above) an employer contribution is required.
Apprenticeship wages are paid by the employer. They should reflect the fact that the learner is in training and must meet at least national minimum wage legislation.

Future opportunities

The trainer/assessor will discuss what ‘next steps’ options are available. These will be
tailored to requirements and will outline opportunities to progress training and career
further. Typical progression is to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Management or into
accounting, ICT or customer service specialisms.

Further information

Following enrolment, learners engage in a blended programme of training and support that may include attendance at group training sessions and a mixture of on-line and face to face support from their trainer/assessor. It is vital that learners have access to a computer and the internet to use their online portfolio and facilitate self-directed learning.
