English & maths

We are committed to helping students improve their skills in English and maths. Students on a full-time course at College who missed out on GCSE qualifications at grades A-C in these subjects at school will attend additional classes and receive support to enhance their grades. Depending on individual ability, students will work towards GCSE, City & Guilds or Functional Skills awards to ensure that they have the qualifications needed to progress to university or employment.

Explore Drawing – This unit is an introduction to the many ways you might use drawing or mark-making materials, techniques and processes within the world of art and design. You will be encouraged to research and develop creative ideas for your drawings and to experiment with 2 dimensional (2D) materials and equipment, for example, pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, brushes, stencils, computers, scanners, photography and different papers.

Explore Printmaking – Through a series of experiments using both traditional and new technologies you will be introduced to a range of printmaking processes and techniques for example, monoprint, frottage, block printing, lino and wood cutting and silkscreen.

Explore Mixed Media – This unit will build on the work you have done in Drawing and Printmaking and you will investigate how materials can be manipulated. You will experiment with montage and collage and perhaps use photographs, fabrics and yarns, inks, dyes and found materials. Computers, printers and scanners will also be useful media for developing and realising your ideas.

3D Design Crafts – This unit explores working in 3 dimensions (3D), for example, through using clay and glazes, plaster, textiles, wood, metal, card, paper pulp, papier-mâché and found objects. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated to you and you will be encouraged to experiment with them, eventually designing and creating your own 3D pieces.

In all units you will learn how to work safely and reduce risks in the work area.

Self management skills will underpin all the units and you will be expected to attend regularly and be punctual. You will be expected to take responsibility for your work and for meeting agreed deadlines. You will be taught how to evaluate your own performance and how to improve your skills and knowledge.

Entry requirements

Students must have achieved 2 GCSEs at grade E or above or an entry level 3 qualification.

To gain certification learners must achieve all units of the course but will be certificated separately for each part of the qualification.

You will be assessed on both the practical and the written work that you have produced during the unit and also on the observations that the teachers have made in relation to your self management and health and safety.
