Film Studies AS/A2 Level at Nottingham Academy

Course description

If you enjoy films and want to learn how to explore the major
art form of our cultural lives, then this is the course for you.
You will get the chance to analyse and reflect on films, but
also to be creative. It is a good arts subject for the non- arts
specialist as well as the film enthusiast.

Course content

In Film Studies you will study cinema as a medium; as an art
form and as a social and economic institution. It is not purely
'watching' films.

Units covered at AS
FM1 – Exploring film form.
FM2 – British and American Film:
– Producers and audiences of film.
– Topics in British film.
– US film – comparative of two films.

Units covered at A2
FM3 – Film research and creative projects.
FM4 – Varieties of film experience: issues and debates.
– World cinema.
– Spectatorship.
– Single film study.

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including B grade or above in English.


Through coursework (40%) and examination (60%).

Future opportunities

As an academic A level, this shows that you can research
evidence, write well considered essays and have creative
skills. You could follow through your interest by studying film
at university. It is also beneficial for any subject or career that
requires close analytical skills.
