French AS level at The Stourport High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

This course looks at issues relevant to young people in society through the culture and language of the French-speaking world. It builds on GCSE language skills through the study of topics such as TV, film, music, advertising, ICT, fashion, sports and health, friendships and family relationships. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are developed using a range of books, videos, tapes, the internet, ICT, magazines and newspapers. You will be informed about current youth culture in France and helped with your accent and fluency in speaking French. Opportunities to visit French-speaking countries will be offered where possible, either as work experience, exchanges or residential trips. Additional self-study is expected – you will need to have an interest in current French affairs and keep up to date with important French news events.



There is no coursework for French. There are two exams, which take place in May / June.


Module 1: Listening, Reading and Writing 70%

Module 2: Speaking 30%

Future opportunities

Foreign languages are increasingly sought after by employers, and possible careers include teaching, translating, interpreting, secretarial work, law, tourism, engineering and product design, scientific research and international business occupations.

Universities like students to have a foreign language and offer a range of courses in specific languages, and also with combinations such as joint honours with law, business, maths, marketing and tourism. These also offer opportunities for funded university exchanges abroad.
