Public Services BTEC Diploma Level 3 at North Kent College
The two year BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services introduces you to the world of the Public Services. This course has been developed to meet the needs of students who are serious about pursuing a career in uniformed public services. It will provide you with the opportunity to gain a realistic understanding of the features of each service and the expectations of serving the public. Areas of study include: government policies, teamwork, discipline, physical preparation, understanding the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on public services and crime and its effects on society.
The course is aimed at 16-19 year olds who have just completed their GCSEs, or are looking to get back into education to study in this expanding and desirable subject area.
The course consists of 9 units. Units:
- Government, Policies and the Public Services
- Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services
- Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
- Fitness Testing and Training for the Uniformed Public Services
- Planning and Management of Major Incidents
- Career Planning for the Public Services
- Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
- Skills for Land Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
- Responding to Emergency Service Incidents
The course requires successful applicants to have 5 GCSEs grades A*- C; these must include English and Maths or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma at a Merit grade.
A wide variety of assessments will be used. The BTEC programme will use continuous assessment rather than examinations and you will be able to track your performance as you work towards the pass, merit and distinction grades. You will be encouraged to manage your own assessments and identify where you have met the required standards. Methods of assessment may include web blogs, presentations, practical demonstrations, posters, reports, leaflets, interviews and discussions. To facilitate assessment, you will be expected to devote personal time for your studies.

You may be able to progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma, Higher Education or careers in the Police Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Armed Forces, Prison and Ambulance Services.
How will I be taught? The programme is taught through theoretical, practical and simulation work. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. You will need an active passion for public services and working with the public. Your tutors will encourage you to discuss your own achievements as well as the issues in society. Much of your assessment will be online in the form of web logs (blogs) and discussion of key points. The course will also include a range of day trips, careers talks, visiting speakers and residential trips.
Additional Courses* During the course there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main BTEC programme. These additional qualifications may include first aid and customer services.
