Carpentry & Joinery Diploma Level 1 at PETROC

Course description

The Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery is ideal for learners with no prior experience as it introduces the learner to basic carpentry and joinery skills. The course is designed to help candidates learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment in the industry and career progression.

Course content

This course covers the knowledge needed to get started in the construction industry including; building Methods, construction technology, health and safety, information, quantities and communicating. You will also study theory and practical in units specific to carpentry and joinery including; woodworking joints, working with hand tools and portable power tools. 

As part of this study programme you will undertake maths & English (if you have not achieved a Grade C GCSE in these subjects), work experience, enrichment and tutorial.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English Language. 

At the end of the one-year programme all learners are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at grade 4, or show that they have been working towards improving their English and Maths by achieving an improvement to their previous grade.

Assessment

Your knowledge will be assessed by a question and answer paper on our Virtual Learning Environment system. Practical assessments will assess your skills against strict criteria in practical activities.

Financial information

Do I need any equipment?
Students are required to purchase their own safety boots, access to workshops is not permitted without them. Students are also required to provide their own stationery and textbooks. Equipment can be discussed fully at interview and a kit list will be sent out prior to the start of the course.

Are there any costs for this course?
Students are asked to pay a contribution towards educational visits. If you are 19+ there will also be course fees, unless you are eligible for financial support, details of which are available from the Guidance Centre team.

Future opportunities

Following this course there is the opportunity to progress to a Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry, Bench Joinery, or Furniture Making. You could also seek employment in the construction industry and undertake further study through the apprenticeship route.
