Sports Studies for Individual Sports Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

This programme will give you an insight into all aspects of your chosen sport and individual player development. We will help you gain not just the qualification, skills and knowledge, but the work ethic, personality attributes and softer skills that can make a real difference in making you stand out in a crowded jobs market.

We'll give you the opportunity to gain extra coaching qualifications in the sport of your choice.

You'll be taught through a mixture of practical classes, workshops, collaborative learning and distance learning. Our teachers are ambitious, talented and passionate about making your experience at college the very best it can be. They have up to date industry experience to share with you and the energy and enthusiasm to help you to get where you need to be.

By the end of the course you'll have developed a broad and diverse range of skills and qualities that will prepare you for your career in sport. If you really want to make a difference in sport and within your community then this course is for you.

Course content

You'll study units such as anatomy and physiology, fitness testing and training for sport, and lifestyle and nutrition, while focusing on the development and analysis of your individual sport.

Your study programme, will give you the opportunity to continue your academic development, take part in valuable work experience and enhance your employability skills such as English and maths.


Choose from one of our Sport Academies or the Leadership Academy

As a full-time student, while studying this course you'll have the opportunity to join one of our 14 sport academies, where you will receive the following for your chosen sport:

  • Up to nine hours of professional training every week.
  • The opportunity to compete in local, national and international competitions.
  • A personalised training and development programme and nutritional advice.
  • Our professional Academy coaches together with our strength and conditioning and physiotherapy teams will support you all the way.
  • Access to Olympic standard gym.

If you prefer not to be part of the Sports Academies you will join our new and exciting Leadership Academy where you will complete various volunteering experiences as part of your study programme.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade A*-C including English Language and maths.
