Biology at Dyson Perrins CofE Academy
If you are looking to break into the world of Science, studying Biology is a great start. Your Biology A Level could serve as an entry qualification to Higher Education or help you gain employment in a scientific field of any endeavor.Students study a wide range of topics including the core principles of Biology, genes and genetic engineering and the effects of the environment. They learn to differentiate and assimilate detailed information and to draw logical conclusions from scientific evidence.Biology is one of the most popular A Level subjects in the country, attracting students that study a wide range of other subjects.
Some of these students enjoy the subject so much they eventually choose a biologically related degree course. Whatever field you eventually work in,you will find Biology a very rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career.
AS Level Units
Unit 1 - paper covers Cells, enzymes, disease and the respiratory and circulatory systems. The examination lasts for 1 hour 15 minutes.
Unit 2 - covers the variety of living things. The examination lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes.
Unit 3 - investigative and practical assessment. Students carry out practical work and written work on a designated topic related to the specification
A2 Level Units
Unit 4 - paper covers populations and environments. The examination lasts for 1 hour 30 minutes.
Unit 5 - paper covers control in cells and organisms. The examination lasts for 2 hours 15 minutes.
Students must have studied Core and Additional Science or the separate triple Sciences at GCSE. A Level Biology is a rigorous A Level and it is recommended that they should have at least a B grade in GCSE Science. Having qualifications in triple Science will be an initial advantage, but these are not necessary to take the course.
