Computing AS Level at Highbury College

Course description

This carefully planned A Level Computing programme gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works and they can discover new ways to use and analyse information.

The student will develop a broad understanding of the key principles of computer systems, including data, hardware, software and communications.

It’s an ideal programme if you’re planning to study computer science, engineering or robotics at university or if you have ambitions to work in the computer industry.

You will learn in a variety of ways, including demonstrations, skills workshops and formal lessons.

Course content

This programme will give you a solid grounding not only in computing theory and problem solving, but also consists of practical work.

You will learn to use industry standard software, build and manipulate hardware devices and develop software programs.

For your coursework you will then apply these skills to develop and document computing solutions to real-world problems.

Entry requirements

You will be expected to have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including Mathematics and English.

If you have studied computing at GCSE then you will need to have achieved a grade B.


For assessment at AS Level, you will complete a mix of externally assessed written and on-screen examinations.

Successful completion of the AS is needed to progress to the A Level units.

Future opportunities

Students go on to study subjects such as mathematics, computing, computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, robotics at university.

The programme could also be used to improve career opportunities generally.
