Media Studies AS Level at Southend High School for Girls

Course description

This course enables candidates to develop a critical
awareness and understanding of the media and its role in
building and moulding society and its attitudes through the
exploration of the products of media production processes
(media texts), the institutions which produce them and
the audiences which respond to them.

Course content

1. Foundation Portfolio G321: 50% of AS, 25% of A2.
Practical Coursework.
Candidates produce two paired media artefacts: the front
cover of a school magazine and a music magazine.

2. Key Media Concepts G322: 50% of AS, 24% of A2.
2 hour examination on TV Drama and the Film Industry.

Future opportunities

This course will be of use to those students wishing to
pursue higher education in the arts, communications and
humanities subjects. The technical, creative and evaluative
skills they will learn are invaluable and will equip them with
an advantage in this ever changing technological age.
 
The world is saturated by the media and a greater
understanding of how the media operates and its influence
on society will be of assistance in whatever career they
choose to pursue.
